High church

baseball-1957-clevelandAwed by the spectacle
blissfully confused to meaning
wide-eyed youth
confirmed in mystical faith
spiritual pageantry
standing for opening homily,
crowd vibrant, then bowed
reverence, singing along
opening hymn of allegiance
some know the words

Opening day, paradoxically
given all the answers
yet you need to discover
unending myriad of questions
finding your own way home

you tried discernment
unsure, wavering, exasperated
still loyal; the true believernicolletpark

Then came one
still sweetly recalled summer
prayerfully answering the call,
taking final vows,
when, in seven
yours won it all.

Long ago ordained, now
consecrated regular – your
stately, charismatic garments
proudly sweat-blotched, faded
bent-brimmed woolen miter
adornment off-kilter

presiding from
sun-soaked choir box-pew,ebbets-field2
lead provocateur –
sitting, standing, exultantly
cheering ‘Hallelujah!’
(modern translation)

Plastic chalice,
ice-cold communion potable
condiment-slathered
tubular unity bread
feeds heart, soul, head

Eucharistic celebration
pipe organ crescendos
punctuate ingrained,
ever-differing liturgy
opportunisticallyvintage-baseball
engaging homily played out

congregants alternately
stand in joyful anticipation,
sit in veneration, anguish

Ritualistic, solemn,
sacramental. Reverential.

True faith comes when
exuberance, not feigned,
reverberates, message lingers
long after you exit the temple
crossing the white lines drawn
on vibrant green
lessons ingrained
personal parables formulated

allowing you to be in the world,
of the world. Baseball.

Amen.

Neophyting

megaphone3Self-ostracized
scorned
self-loathing as
blood-sport
worthy, not worthy;
worthy, not worthy –
worthy…not saying

pseudo-suicide by self
righteous indignation
how dare you
look at yourself in
the mirror, mirror on
the walls you build
keep people in, out, at
bay, and shrilly proclaim
I am
Somebody!
I am
Somebody!
I ammegaphone6
somebody needs to take me
seriously?
Are you kidding me?

I gave you my best
(having no worst)
you got the better part of
the deal I am willing to
make you hate yourself

let me go away
triumphantly blowing
my own horn until you
stop me
if you’ve heard this one
before

Whereas

Never having been mrsmith2
as naive as
I should have been

exonerated for crimes
against logic

recycled, repurposed
repent sinners!
repressed no longer

naiveté begat experience
I can elocute
to it all in open court

Get back, honky cats
I got this.
Flat out truth: I got this.

The maturation

boxer7

Braggadocio
prior physical prowess
spendable currency
boyish man
posturing, preening
standing up,
stand out, back it up

chest bumps fist pumps
in-your-face
yeah, baby! machismo
odes to, by, about a self-
almost-wannabe

couldda, shouldda
been a pretender, you;
Brando’s Malloy
sans street cred, intensityboxer4

reflecting on easy ego-jacks
then, now?
adrenaline rush requires
no cut man or handy styptic
pencil in another win

misshapen, badge-of-honor
knuckles swapped out;
manicured cleanliness, play
rock, paper, scissors
while pen obliterates sword
words, ideas are hammer-drops

haughty satisfaction
comes only in the learned
subtlety, brutal effectiveness of
bludgeoning foes
with finely hewn guile
