Ghosts of Niemöller

First they came for the immigrants
And I did not speak out
Because I was not an immigrant
My ancestors were, but that was different
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Even though America is kind of socialist
But real socialists are evil – so they say
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Not anymore anyway but I used to be
my dad, too - and all four grandparents
But unions nowadays, well, you know…
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was only half a Jew - not even
Raised as one, didn’t know I was a Jew
So I don’t know anything about that
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
So I had to tell them myself:
“Yeah, I knew you’d get around to me.
Eventually.”
